Requirements and Limits for Silfra Snorkeling

Who can and cannot go
Age: You must be at least 12 years old. If you are under 18, a guardian must accompany you. There is no upper age limit as long as you are in good health and have medical clearance (see below).
Size: You must be at least 145 to 150 centimetres (roughly 4’9") tall and at least 45 kilograms (roughly 100 pounds). Maximum weight is roughly 120 kilograms (roughly 265 pounds). These are drysuit sizing limits; the operator cannot fit suits outside that range.
Swimming ability: You must be able to swim and be comfortable in water. Silfra is not a beginner swimming lesson. You need to be confident moving in water, managing your breathing through a snorkel, and staying horizontal and controlled. This is a rule, not a suggestion.
Health and medical form: Everyone fills out a medical form before the tour. Questions cover heart history, lung problems, ear issues, pregnancy, and general fitness. Be honest. These are not meant to exclude people; they are meant to make sure the guide knows what to watch for and can help if something comes up.
Age 60 and over: If you are 60 or older, you need a doctor’s sign-off. Some operators lower this to 45+ if you have heart history or smoke. This is because the cold water and exertion carry a real cardiovascular load. A quick letter from your GP covers it.
Pregnant people: Not suitable. The drysuit, the cold, the exertion, and the altitude all carry risks in pregnancy. Skip this tour during pregnancy and book it after.
Medical conditions to mention
Talk to your guide or the operator before booking if you have asthma, claustrophobia, or ear problems. Asthma can be triggered by cold water or the tight neoprene hood; a guide needs to know that. Claustrophobia is a real issue with the hood and gloves; some people adapt, some do not. Ear problems (perforated eardrums, tubes, etc.) can make the snorkel unsafe. None of this automatically disqualifies you, but the operator needs to know upfront.

Frequently asked questions
Can non-swimmers do this tour?
No. You must be able to swim and be comfortable in water. The drysuit will float you, but swimming ability is a safety requirement, not a guideline. If you cannot swim, this is not the tour for you.
What if I am not tall enough?
The minimum height is roughly 145–150 cm because drysuit sizing only goes down to that range. If you are shorter, the suit will not fit properly and you cannot go. There is no workaround.
Do I need a medical exam to go?
You need to fill out a medical form; everyone does. If you are 60+, you need a doctor’s letter. If you have significant health conditions, consult your doctor. But no, you do not need a full medical exam unless your doctor recommends one.
